On January 7, 2025, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the Shahid Madho Singh Haath Kharcha Scheme at the Adivasi Mela in Bhubaneswar. This initiative aims to reduce dropout rates among Scheduled Tribe (ST) students by providing a one-time financial assistance of ₹5,000 to those enrolling in Class IX and Class XI. The scheme targets students from families with an annual income not exceeding ₹2,50,000.
The primary goal is to promote educational continuity among tribal students by offering financial incentives, thereby encouraging them to pursue education beyond the upper primary level and addressing high dropout rates during critical transitions.
Eligibility criteria
Student Status: Must belong to Scheduled Tribes and attend government or government-aided schools.
Family Income: Annual income should not exceed ₹2,50,000.
Incentive Disbursement: ₹5,000 provided
directly to the student’s bank account.
Application Process: School Principals or Headmasters recommend eligible students, processing applications through the Odisha State Scholarship Portal.
History of Madho Singh
Born around 1786 in Ghess, Bargarh district, Madho Singh was a zamindar who governed 20 villages. He was dedicated to justice and the welfare of his community, leading a fierce resistance against British colonial rule, especially following the mistreatment of his family.
During the First War of Indian Independence in 1857, Madho Singh emerged as a key leader of tribal resistance in Odisha. He united various tribal groups to combat British oppression, using guerrilla warfare tactics and leading attacks against British forces, leveraging his strategic skills and knowledge of local terrain.
Madho Singh’s resistance ended in 1858 when he was captured after intense fighting. His execution on December 31, 1858, marked a tragic conclusion to his rebellion. Despite his death, Singh’s legacy lives on as a symbol of courage and resilience, particularly among tribal communities in Odisha.
